 Dear Metta,
Having challenges in knowing "What is Mine to do or Not to do" -
 looking for a SIGN POST
Journey Continues

Dear Journey Continues ~
How do you know what's yours to do and what direction to take?  I can tell you the process I use...and, possibly it will work for you too.  Remember though, that as individualized expressions of THE ONE how it works may depend on your perception and perspective ('cause that just seems to be how it is with everything in this life experience).  And, ultimately, you're have to decide if it might (or will) work for you.
Ok, first we need to "Break it down" (Can I get a beat?...oh, that's so 80s...sorry, little flash-back there), by determining if when you say "mine to do" if you're speaking from the little me or the big ME.  I know you know the difference!..but, for anyone that hasn't heard that expression, to me it means are you coming from your "ego" (the little me) or your "higher-self" (guided by the divine Spirit within)?    If you don't know the answer then ask yourself:  1.  Is this going to bring joy to me?  2.  Is this going to bring joy to someone else?  3.  Am I doing this because it fulfills a desire?  4.  Is this an expression of love?  or 1.  Am I doing this because someone else "needs" me to do it?  2.  Am I doing this because if I don't someone will be mad at me or not like me.  3.  Am I doing this because I think it needs to be done and I'm the only one that can do it (the right way ; ))  4.  Am I doing it for any reason other than love (I'm afraid I'll loss my job, lose a friend, etc...)

If your answer is the 1st group of 4, then it's very likely that it's yours to do.  If your answer is the 2nd group of 4 then it might be something that isn't yours to do.  If after this process you're still not clear then it may require more thought/prayer...and, with any luck, while you're thinking & praying someone else will get it done!!

As for the direction to take...In the words of Lewis Carroll, as expressed through the Cheshire Cat (and then again by George Harrison)...if you don't know where you're going, any road will take you there...So, determine where it is you desire to go and then you can begin to map out the journey from where you are in this moment to your destination.

Peace & Happy Journey!

Dear Metta,
I've heard that you can attain "enlightenment"
by simplifying. What do you think?
Signed ~ On the path

Dear On(e),
I too have heard that often said and while I agree to a point, I can't fully embrace any belief system that eliminates shopping from the equation : )

To me, "simplifying" means more than letting go of material things. After all, if it was just a matter of cleaning out the closet and drawers we'd practically all be enlightened and there would be no war, poverty, or....oh, yeah...that's another subject.

Anyway, I believe that at least part of the answer is that we have to let go of anything that's not constructive...any feelings of negativity, resentment, etc...in other words, emotional clutter...not just eliminating material things. If you have "things" that no longer serve you then it will open you to "the flow" of the universe by releasing & circulating them however, I don't believe that just letting go of material things is enough on its own. While some would say that by letting go of the material things you have more time to be "at one", I believe that Spirit/God (any name you choose to call it) is everywhere present...including in those red pumps or blue high-tops you bought last week.

Dear Metta,
I do have a question concerning the metaphysical differences in elimination (to do away with that which does not serve you) and renunciation - aren't both similar to Ruiz's work in the Four Agreements when ceasing to agree with anything other than : being impeccable with your word, don't take anything personally, don't make assumptions and always do your best?

I am concerned that I have possibly misunderstood elimination and should be using the term renunciation - but if so what would be the short definition of renunciation?  I'm just trying to put the correct energy into the thought process.  I have caused the sands to move and now am checking as to whether I need a slight course correction.
Love and Blessings,

Dear Continuing the Journey ~

My first thought when I read your question was that we often hear those words used as synonyms; so, I went to a dictionary to see what the physical definitions are (since we know as metaphysicians that we have to understand the physical before we can venture into the metaphysical).  The definitions were:
"renunciation - noun: to give up voluntarily or formally  elimination - noun: letting go".

Personally, I found this interesting as I felt that both words would be a verb.  To me, in the process of giving up or letting go that implied that an "action" had been taken.  At the risk of sounding crass; (but, remember my Ph.D. means "piled higher and deeper), I shared my thinking with a retired minister who was visiting this afternoon; and, she said "well, when you go to the bathroom what's left in the commode is elimination" and I said "isn't that actually the product of the act of elimination?" And, after a few moments of thought she said "well, yes!"...

To me, after prayerful consideration (and a glass or two of wine) if there is a difference in the two I would explain it this way:  When you eliminate something you have it in your possession and you throw it away or release it.  When you renounce (the root of renunciation) it is something that you refused to make a part of you; and by refusing to take it on or making it your own you don't have the need to eliminate.

An example by Dr. Terry is (para) is, "you can eliminate garbage when you take it out; and, you do that pretty much without thinking.  Garbage piles up and you take it out.  Or, you can eliminate a problem in your life (such as an abusive husband) and take up with another because you haven't dealt with your issues  - thinking through the process and the consequences.  BUT, renunciation is a very conscious act requiring careful consideration (such as disinheriting a child or refusing a throne) and thinking about the potential consequences.

I have to admit that while I have The Four Agreements in my library and found it to be wonderful that I only got as far as "domestication" and have been so caught up in becomming "undomesticated" since then, that I haven't finished the book.  So, I really don't think I can speak to what you reference, other than they seem to be good guidelines, for everybody all the time...making them a Universal Principle.

Enjoy the journey!!  Because, it isn't about reaching your destination...it's about your journey...oh, and, remember when your speaking of energy and moving sands to focus the energy and try to keep your sand in one pile as you're moving it, instead of scattered...because scattered energy & scattered sand could result in scattered results.

Peace & love,
 Metta
